Oriental blue and white porcelain has crossed many roads to be where it is now - at our homes. This fine and translucent porcelain comes from China, while Persian cobalt provided the elegant blue to make the final and perfect touch. Back in the 15th century, the Ming dynasty of China used this imperial combination to make vases. Although Chinese had already possessed fine porcelain, blue cobalt was used to make decorations, usually applied by hand. How important and beautiful it was, showed a mass-production of fine blue and white porcelain in 14th century. Back then, cobalt valued twice as gold since it was a precious commodity.
High-fired blue and white porcelain we use today was made centuries ago with the same technique - applying and decorating translucent Chinese porcelain with blue before firing. Surely not an easy and cheap thing to make, Chinese blue and white porcelain was also at high price in Europe and America. From the 17th century on, this type of porcelain was in collection of many princes and kings. Since the decorations on porcelain were manufactured, they’ve been used to show symbols that were different for every country. For instance, Ming dynasty porcelain wares were symbolized by Chinese dragon; on the other hand, the emphasis was also on flowers and elegantly portrayed characters (usually Persian letters) of that time. This technique, along with blue and white elegancy, had formed many later patterns that appeared on European market.
Today, there are dozens of porcelain patterns made with the same Chinese scent and passion.
