Our president & design director, Mrs. Wendy Kvalheim, was announced honoree for legends 2017 by Pratt Institute. As its alumna, Mrs. Kvalheim recalled her memories and importance of art education. Moreover, she emphasized the beauty of museum reproductions, crafting process & almost a century rich history of Mottahedeh & Co.

Wendy Kvalheim, President and Design Director of Mottahedeh & Company, chats with Luxury Marketing Council President Gregory Furman about the Mottahedeh and the design development of porcelain tableware and antique reproductions for major American museums.

In order to cast porcelain, plaster molds are first made, then filled with liquid clay. The plaster acts as a sponge and pulls some of the moisture out of the liquid clay. The remaining clay is poured out leaving a crust. Once dry, it is removed as a cast piece.

After a piece is cast, imperfections and joins are removed by hand. They are scraped smooth.

Once the wet porcelain clay dries, it is ready to be removed from the molds. This type is porcelain is called "Green" and will not be hard until it has been fired at least two times.

All finished pieces are glazed before they are fired.

After first firing, all pieces are inspected to make sure there are no blemishes or spots.

After the first firing, decals are applied and then the piece is fired again.

The brown/black paint is gold. Once it is fired and burnished, it will be the shiny gold you're used to seeing.
